Llewellyn's Perry

We Visited Llewellyn's Orchard a couple of weeks back when we got wind of an IRISH VINEYARD! We did some sampling and David showed us around. We decided the Perry was the perfect natural alcoholic beverage to bring to Yoga Sound System. Read below from David to become a little more acquainted with the Perry and get your taste buds going for later:

Llewellyns Perry is the latest addition to our range of farm-produced wines and ciders, which we make on our small fruit farm and vineyard in Lusk. Everything I do and produce at the farm is driven by a passion, since childhood, for growing food plants and using them to produce delicious and natural foods and beverages.

Perry is basically pear wine, and it is traditionally made in very specific localised regions of the world, mainly localised pockets of England,France, Austria, and Germany. We make ours from our own pears, grown on our farm and also foraged from semi-wild pear trees.

We make our perry in the same way wine is made from grapes. We harvest the fruit when it is at optimum ripeness, then we crush the whole fruit to a pulp, and press the juice from that pulp. The juice is sweet but also a little sour and bitter. The sweet fruit sugars ferment to alcohol, and the other flavours evolve during fermentation to give the finished perry the right balance of acidity and tannins. The fermentation of the juice takes several weeks, and then the perry needs to rest and mature for up to 1 year before it is ready for bottling. Every drop of perry started out as pure pear juice – we don’t take short cuts by adding water or sugar during the making.

We make our “Fizzante” perry using the ‘Champagne Method’. This involves bottling the fermented perry into strong Champagne type bottles and inducing a further fermentation inside the bottle. This produces the lively natural sparkle in the wine, and it takes up to 1 further year inside the bottle for the fermentation and settling of the yeast to complete. When the yeast has settled inside the bottle, it needs to be ‘riddled’, or vibrated, over several weeks to move all the yeast deposit to one end of the bottle. Then by a skilled and tedious process, the bottles are opened and ‘disgorged’, removing the yeast deposit, and then re-closed. We now have the finished product – a delicate “pearChampagne”, which is naturally clear and naturally sparkling. The finished perry is dry, fruity, delicate, and light, with only around 6% alcohol. It is ideal as a “local” substitute for Prosecco or Champagne, and can be enjoyed either on its own, or with food.

We sell our perry, and all of our local fruit and our farm-produced juices, vinegars and ciders, at 3 farmers markets each week, in Temple Bar, Glasnevin, and Dun Laoghaire www.llewellynsorchard.ie (currently offline for upgrading) 087-2843879.

Your Grooving Guide - Catherine Bergin

CatBergin.jpg

We bet you are all dying to know who’s going to be guiding you through your journey on the mat next Friday. A resident yoga teacher at Google, we will let Catherine introduce her beautiful self to you guys:

Catherine, when did you first get into yoga and why?

I was always intrigued by yoga, but only got properly into practicing about 2.5 years ago. I was planning on traveling and had saved up some money, but when things didn’t work out I decided to spend that on a yoga teacher training course here in Dublin over 10 months.

I didn’t intend to actually teach at the beginning, but as time went by I became more comfortable with the idea.

What does yoga mean to you?

Hmm.. for me yoga means different things at different times. Sometimes yoga is playful and fun and I try out new challenging poses I see on Instagram, other times yoga is an outlet, or a way to escape from difficult situations. Yoga always finds a place in my weekly life, its purpose simply changes as my needs change.

What is it about teaching yoga that you like?

I like the atmosphere created in a room of people who have taken the time out of their day to focus on themselves. There is always a great energy in groups practicing together, whether it be that we’re all struggling to hold our balance in one-legged down dog, or we’re all enjoying the body scan during savasana at the end of class.

Describe your practice in one word:

Graceful .. I hope

What’s your favourite song to groove to on your mat?

Sunset lover by Petit Biscuit

What can people expect at Yoga Sound System:

People can expect to move their hips and hamstrings! These are two of the most common areas of tightness and it’s really nice to give them some attention. It’s particularly useful for those who run or play sport such as rugby and football, or those looking to increase flexibility. We’ll do so in fluid and controlled postures, so everyone will be able to give every pose a try even if they are new to yoga.

What’s one bit of advice you would like to offer people when they step onto their mat - whether it’s for their first or 100th time:

Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle ;)

Yoga Sound System's Logo Lowdown

Everyone loves a story so we thought we would share the tale of our logo. We wanted people to see our logo and feel everything we believe Yoga Sound System encompasses.

We toyed around with the Kundalini Serpent logo as it somewhat resembles the Y and S’s of Yoga Sound System and incorporates the body's main energy centres. We then wanted to incorporate the music aspect by throwing on a pair of headphones. As an event manager and DJ we decided it would probably be safer to hand it over to the professionals...That's where the awesome guys at All Out Design stepped up! We literally word dumped the brief to them of  what YSS is about:

“A harmonic mix of music and movement to balance the body and mind, bringing the dance floor to the mat, soulful and soothing sounds, purposely curated soundtracks, experiencing a new kind of high, bold and positive…”

Safe to say they hit the nail on the head! The S’s join together to create the beautiful infinity symbol - a never ending loop. It represents forever or always or limitless, never ending possibilities. Think about the idea of never ending possibilities and apply it to your life :) Inversions are part of yoga practice and have many benefits, both physically and mentally! The pose chosen represents the Y and also appears playful and fun - which is what we are about! Lastly, what represents the power of music and sound vibrations better than an old skool speaker box?!

There’s another aspect we love that delves a little deeper...the COLOURS!!! Colours have a profound effect on the body, from psychological and emotional effects right down to the colour of the foods we eat and the parts of the body they impact!!

Red: Red is the color of fire and blood, it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love.

Orange: Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation.

Yellow: Yellow is the color of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow produces a warming effect, arouses cheerfulness, stimulates mental activity, and generates muscle energy.

Green: Green is the color of nature. It symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety.

There you have it (",) Massive shout out and THANK YOU to our friends from All Out Design, looking forward to flowing with you on the 24th - away from your spray cans!!

We love our logo and hope you guys do too! xx

Tasty Treats and Yummy Eats! We meet Laura from Amazonia Açaí

We caught up with Laura Arnold from @lauraarnoldeats & @amazoniaeu to learn more about Amazonia Açaí

Laura, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Of course! I'm a Dublin-born, self-confessed 'foodie' with a love of travelling and discovering everything delicious along the way. I moved back from Sydney about six months ago, where I lived for five years working in the food, events and hospitality industry and generally enjoying the Aussie lifestyle. It was in Sydney that I discovered my love of fitness, health and wellbeing, which has been a passion of mine ever since.

How did you get into the açaí game?

I first discovered açaí (pronounced Ah-sigh-eee!) in its home of Brazil when I travelled through South America back in 2011. In Brazil it's traditionally served for breakfast with loads of fresh fruit, so it became a delicious, low cost breakfast staple while we were there. It was only when I moved to Sydney that I learned about açaí's health benefits, so I began incorporating it into my diet. When I moved back to Ireland, açaí was one thing that I missed (apart from the Tim Tams, beaches and the sunshine..), and I couldn't get my hands on it here. I linked up with Amazonia, an Australian company who are the number one brand of organic, sustainably sourced açaí in Australia, and decided to try and introduce it to Ireland!

Why should people include açaí as part of their diet?

Firstly, because it's delicious! Unlike a lot of 'superfoods' (I've choked down a lot of spirulina in my time), açaí is a genuinely tasty addition to any diet. Secondly, the açaí berry is a serious nutritional powerhouse, with 2-3 times the antioxidant concentration of blueberries, omegas 3,6 & 9 and over 50 essential nutrients that are unique to the Amazon soil. The deep purple colour of Amazonia's organic açaí comes from its high levels of anthocyanins, which indicates antioxidant capacity and is associated with the ability to lower cholesterol. The deeper the purple colour the better!

Where can people get their hands on Amazonia Acai?

Amazonia's Açaí Superfood frozen packs are created from premium organic açaí berries grown wild in the Amazon rainforest. They are hand harvested and frozen immediately for unmatched nutritional value. Our frozen smoothie packs are available to buy online at amazonia.organic, and we now offer home deliveries right across Ireland! You can also get your hands on delicious Amazonia Açaí bowls and smoothies at Borlottie in IFSC and Baggot Street, Póg Cafe in town, and shortly at lots more cafes across Dublin.

What should we expect at Yoga Sound System?

At Yoga Sound System, I will be sampling our favourite Amazonia Açaí bowls, made with organic frozen Açaí energy, frozen banana and served with crunchy granola and fresh fruit, which are the perfect cool down after a sweaty session!

So, where did Yoga Sound System start?

To find out where Yoga Sound System started we interviewed ourselves and you'll never guess what happened next!!!

Yoga Sound System is a harmonic mix of music and movement to balance the body and mind.

At Yoga Sound System we take the dancefloor to your mat. Each session consists of carefully curated sounds to sooth the soul.

Yoga Sound System is a collaboration between a personal trainer and DJ, Ronan Mahon - AKA - Tiny Islands and Rachael O'Hegarty, expert events producer and down dog evangelist.

Ronan - I've been matching music to workouts since 2014. At the start of 2016, I had a serious back injury and started taking my yoga practice seriously. Yoga can be quite intimidating for newcomers. There is a lot of misconceptions around yoga and meditation and these misconceptions create barriers. Having experienced the benefits of yoga first hand during my recovery I decided that it was time to break these barriers. What better way to break barriers than with the universal language of music. With this concept in mind, I needed an executioner to help implement Yoga Sound System. Step up, Rachael. I wanted to work with Rachael because she brought a whole new level of experience to the concept. Something that I've found lacking at other yoga events.

Rachael - I've been working in the event's industry for a few years now, the most rewarding part is seeing happy attendees interacting and I love coming up with new ways to encourage this. I have spent the past 6 months in particular (since Wellfest 2016 actually!) focusing on my own wellness - physically and mentally, as a result, I took up yoga and delved deeper into the power of the mind. It has been so enlightening and has had positive consequences in all aspects of my life. I feel there is still quite a big gap between hardcore yogis and party goers and my aim is to bridge this gap and gently open people up to an effectively, simpler way of life - it does take practice, however, with the right mindset things become easier to deal with! I also LOVE my music; house, dance, EDM etc. and understand how powerful it is and the effects it has on the brain. The science behind it is fascinating! And of course I'm a social creature, people are amazing and striking up conversations outside of your comfort zones can lead to wonders! With my passions and skills, I want to create events for people to come together, try something new in a fun environment and listen to those songs they hear on the dancefloor that they can relate to, eat amazing natural foods and actually get mingling with ‘like-minded people'. Something a bit different to a regular night in town but one will also get those endorphins going - if not even more so and for longer!
The universe brought myself and Ronan together to bring you guys Yoga Sound System :)

"The mind is everything, what you think you become" - Buddha. Speak kindly to yourself. X

So there you have it. If Yoga Sound Systems sounds like your bag then mosey on down to South Studios on Friday the 24th of March.

Yoga Sound System - Volume 1 - What to expect

Wondering what to expect at Yoga Sound System? Well here are the answers to all those burning questions.

Who is Yoga Sound System for?

Yoga Sound System is really for everyone. Particularly for those of you that have never tried yoga before but always wanted to this is the ideal event for you to enjoy a fun and inviting practice with a social aspect to it. So whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro we would encourage you all to come along. Music is a universal language which brings us together. We are hoping to use this language to break down barriers and build a squad of music and yoga lovers.

What will the class be like?

Remember this class is all about connecting with the music, yourself and having fun. You can expect some slow breathing to start. We will increase the pace as the class starts to flow (but always work at your own pace) and bring you back down to earth for a few minutes of musical bliss to round off the session.

What will the music be like?

Well, don’t expect humming and chanting. We will be playing a selection of soulful house, yoga specific sounds and you may even hear a few sneaky club classics. Let’s just say we might just raise the tempo from warrior one to warrior three.

What should I wear?

Let’s face it, down dog is not fun in skinny jeans. We suggest tights and a T for girls and shorts ( loose fitting - but no mouse outta the house ) and a T for boys. There are bathrooms at the venue but we suggest you come prepared so that we can kick off at 7:00 pm. We will be mingling after so as you cool down you may want to throw on a jumper at the end.

What should I bring?

Apart from an amazing attitude and your yoga gear, there will be space to leave your bags and personal belongings. While we can’t take responsibility for any lost or stolen goods your items will all be in plain sight and we don’t think you will have anything to worry about. Maybe leave the cheeky naggin at home. DON’T FORGET YOUR MAT!

When should I arrive?

The doors will be open from 6:30 pm. We suggest you arrive at 6:45 pm at the latest. Once the class starts we will not be able to let anyone else in, as per the T&C’s of the ticket.

Where the hell am I going?

Yoga Sound System will be held in South Studios. It’s best to ask Uncle Google where to go. You can find a map here.

Street parking is limited, so you could get public transport to the city and walk or to the nearest bus stop.

Will there be food?

Yes, there will be some delish food provided by the team at CoCu - we’ve gone for tasty vegan options which will hopefully suit everyone’s dietary requirements. Unfortunately, we can not take individual orders.

For treats, Laura Arnold from @lauraarnoldeats will be sampling some tasty Açaí bowls.

It’s Friday, I need alcohol! What will there be to drink?

We will be showcasing a refreshingly different Irish natural beverage that is sure to tickle your fancy, we know you will love it ;)

Booze ain’t my bag. What about me?

No probs, there will be a selection of juices and a new herbal relaxation drink to enhance your experience after the yoga practice.

I want to mingle, what’s the deal?

We want people to stick around and have a chat - It’s a Friday evening after all! There will be a short intro to the products and then you can get eating, drinking and mingling will! Say HI to a stranger ( I dare ya ;) ), it could change your life!

What time does it wrap up?

Officially we finish at 9:00 pm but who knows, the night is but a pup. We all look HOT in activewear - let’s see where the night takes us.
